Photo-taking Tips
White backgrounds win. For most items, a plain, white background is the best possible place to focus attention on the thing being sold and to make it stand out. (The exception, of course, is if the item is white. Then shoot it on a black or dark background.) If the background is cluttered or busy, it may be difficult for buyers to see the item clearly.
How PrettySusan can help: If the photo was taken in front of a cluttered, low-contrast, or distracting background, we can isolate the image and place it against a white background, or another solid-colored background. If the background is mostly fine, but there's a distracting element, we can easily remove it.
Sparkle sells. This should go without saying, but anyone who wants maximum interest and price should photograph the item-whatever it is-when it's looking its best. Clean, dust, polish or do whatever you need to do before taking any photos. Dirt and grime-or just aging and fading-can devalue your item instantly from a buyer's perspective.
How PrettySusan can help: If you simply didn't have the time or ability to spruce up your sale item, fear not. PrettySusan can minimize dirt and give your item digital polish, adding shine, cleanliness and a fresher look.
Show and tell. It's important for the buyer to see the condition and general look of the item that's for sale. Take pictures from several angles and try to capture the real color and texture of the item. Most products should also be photographed close up. Take multiple close-ups if you have to, and photograph brand-name labels or stamps, as well as certificates of authenticity, any unique detailing or features on the object. You certainly don't want a buyer to feel deceived, which can cause disputes and a damaged reputation. Instead, show them the true nature of what they are getting.
How PrettySusan can help: Even your best attempt to photograph an item can leave you with pictures that are overly dark, badly composed, or just don't accurately represent the quality or true colors of the product. We can rebalance color, lighten overly dark photos and fix the contrast in overly bright photos. We can take away distracting glare and reflections from flash photography, and soften harsh lighting. Chances are, whatever the issue, we can help.
Light it up. Choosing the right kind of lighting is essential to getting a great photo. If you're shooting with natural light, make sure it's a sunny, cloudless day, and choose late morning or late afternoon when the sun is bright but not directly overhead. In this case, you may need a tripod to steady your camera, especially for close-up shots.
How PrettySusan can help: If the lighting in your photo could have been better, bring it to us and we can brighten the photo, remove or reduce shadows, intensify color and remove glare off of metallic or shiny surfaces.
Thank you for using PrettySusan! May your customers be many and your sales be swift.
